Must read: Microsoft Research DRM talk

Before you form another stance on DRM, read this briefing. Cory Doctorow presented this talk to Microsoft last month. Cory's exactly correct about DRM. He talks about exactly WHY *I'm not* going to buy any more DVDs or CDs until someone fixes the technology. Very excellent article; a definate must read if you're working with anyone in contact with DRM.

That is an out f#cking standing article! I hate DRM it's the worst idea since the Edsel and now Microsoft is looking into ways to do it at the BIOS/noard level on your pc. I may like MS but I will switch to anything else available if they pull that off.

From the article: "...Jon Johansen, a Norweigan teenager who
wanted to watch French DVDs on his Norweigan DVD player."

This is clearly wrong - French DVD will play in Norwegian DVD players because they're both in the same DVD region.

Wasnt the real reason that he wanted to play DVDs on his Linux box? Shame the author thought he had to invent a pretend motive...

Yes, I understood it was for Linux too. At any rate it's not that much of a stretch that someone would want to watch "RegionX" movies in "RegionY". Happens to my family all the time, and only half the Region 1 DVDs have the subtitles we *need*, and fewer have the ones I want (Dr. Strangelove and Kill Bill being the only two I can think of off hand).
